This coming June, Fira de Barcelona is hosting a trade show devoted to the furniture world, showcasing every possible style of furniture - modern, classic, young, rustic and colonial. The exhibition will feature interior furniture as well as decorative articles. The next Showroom is set to provide a very comprehensive overview of the furniture sector, jointly organized by the trade show institution and the Barcelona Association of Sales Representatives (COACB) which also promoted the first edition of the show in 2013.

According to the latest figures on contracted exhibition space, expectations have already been exceeded and with just two months to go before the event there are already 10,000 sq. m occupied by 110 exhibitors; a figure which, according to forecasts, is likely to increase progressively in the final lead-up to the show. In the international segment the delegation from Portugal stands out, with seven leading companies from the sector taking over a stand area of 900 sq. m.

The event will also play host to various conferences, seminars and workshops conducted by trade professionals from the organizations collaborating with the Furniture Showroom organisers, such as the Barcelona Association of Sales Representatives; the Furniture Retail Guild of Catalonia; the Barcelona Guild of Carpenters, Cabinetmakers Similar Workers; the Habitat Cluster of Catalonia, and the Wood and Furniture Technology Information Centre of Catalonia, CENFIM. The planned activities have a clear educational and informative perspective as well as providing an area where trade professionals in the sector can share ideas and network.

The current figures are very satisfactory,” says the president of the show and the COACB, Enric Enrech. “I’m sure this new project will become one of the benchmark shows in 2015 for a sector that is looking with some optimism towards the future. There's no doubt that this is helped by the internationalization of our sector, with companies already exporting one-third of their output.

A sector en route to recovery

According to a study conducted in March 2015 by the specialist sector analysis firm DBK, after several years of negative growth due primarily to weak domestic demand, the sector's business is being boosted by the good export performance which in 2014 recorded an increase of 20%, amounting to 373 million euros. This figure accounts for 34% of national sales compared to the 12.5% recorded in 2007.

According to forecasts, the gradual reactivation of the residential market and domestic expenditure will have a positive impact on household furniture sales in the short term. For 2015, the market value is estimated at 1,320 million euros, 2% more than in 2014.
