On February 15, the Madrid Design Festival Awards were presented at the Giner de los Rios Foundation, Free Teaching Institution. With these awards, Madrid Design Festival wants to recognize the trajectory of great figures of national and international design, contributing, in turn, to the diffusion of a discipline that transforms our lives on a daily basis.

The first edition of the festival has recognized Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and Martí Guixé. Moreover, Tristan Eaton received the Johnnie Walker Design Award, while in the call of the Rado Star Prize Spain were awarded, ex aequo, Paula Claveria and Pablo Vidiella Huguet.

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec partnered in 1999 to create jobs with a permanent dialogue and a common demand for precision and delicacy. Their work has spanned numerous fields ranging from the conception of small objects to spatial architecture, from craftsmanship to industry, from drawings to videos and photographs, always with research, nature and the poetic as a basis. Many of his creations are considered classics of the 21st century. They have worked, among others, with Cappellini, Vitra, Magis, Kvadrat, Ovalle, Artek or Nani Marquina and his work is exhibited in museums such as the MoMa in New York.

Chosen as creators of the year in the Furniture Fair in 2002 and by Maison & Objet 2011, they have received prizes such as the Grand Prix du Design from the city of Paris 1998, the New York Design Award of the International Contemporary Fair in New York in 1999 and the Fihn-Juhl Prize in Copenhagen in 2008, and they now receive the Madrid Design Festival Award as an award for the best international tour.

Martí Guixé

Martí Guixé celebrated its first 20 professional years in 2017. Formed in Barcelona and Milan as an interior and industrial designer, his career is marked by the search for new product systems, the introduction of design in the field of food (Food Design) and presentation through “performance”. He has worked, among others, with Alessi, Authentics, B-sign, Camper, Cha-cha, Chupa Chups, Corraini, Rome Film Festival, Saporiti Italia, Trico, Very Lustre, Vitra or Watx.

In 1994 and coinciding with his stays as a consultant in Seoul (Korea), he began to develop a new way of understanding the culture of the product in Berlin. His unconventional vision provides ideas of brilliant simplicity and curious seriousness.

Tristan Eaton, Johnnie Walker Design Award

The Madrid Design Festival and the legendary Scotch whiskey firm Johnnie Walker have collaborated to create the ‘Johnnie Walker Design Award‘, an award that supports and empowers talented people who, with their work, contribute significantly to the field of design. Street artist Tristan Eaton, who has flown directly from Los Angeles to receive his first prize in Spain, embodies the values of those who believe in the power of art not only as a visual experience but as an important transmitter of messages. Eaton is a true storyteller, who transforms communities with his talent and attitude towards personal progress. His murals are a true reflection of his deep love for art. He started in the world of urban art by painting billboards and trash containers. At age 18, he designed his first toy for the company Fisher Price, and since then he has not stopped creating striking and striking pieces, based on the collage technique. After opening his creative agency Thunderdog Studios in New York, in 2008 the artist produced a series of posters that were used during the presidential campaign of Barack Obama. Now, inspired by the flavor and aroma of Scotch whiskey, Eaton has intervened Johnnie Walker's iconic striding man, shaping his colorful designs in the limited edition ‘Artist Series‘.

Rado Star Prize Spain 2018

The jury of the Rado Star Prize Spain decided to award, ex aequo, among the 10 finalists of its call the projects The Chair by Paula Clavería, for its interpretation of the design from the point of view of the concept and Kuria Table by Pablo Vidiella Huguet for its interpretation of the design from the point of view of the object. The latter was also recognized with the Audience Award. With the Rado Star Prize, the Swiss watch brand linked to the world of design, wants to recognize the new talents of Spanish design.

The 10 finalists chosen by a jury composed of renowned representatives of the design world, including Oskar Zieta and Rosana Orlandi, are part of one of the Madrid Design Festival exhibitions that you can visit at COAM until the end of the festival.
