Piedra Papel Tijera studio is based on “sun and shade” concept to design the Calau restaurant in a privileged location of Calella de Palafrugell

A powerful challenge was presented to the interior design studio Piedra Papel Tijera with the design of this restaurant. The well-known Calau pinchos restaurant of 30m2 decides to open a new 500m2 restaurant 50 meters up on the same street. A place with a privileged location and views of the beautiful Costa Brava village of Calella de Palafrugell.

This is how the studio explains us the project,

We designed a concept based on sun and shade, something that reminds us of the long summer days on the Costa Brava and that indoor / outdoor game.

We focus on the qualities of the space, large windows and direct views of the sea and thereby generating the feeling of being on a Mediterranean porch.

We work with superior materials such as oak, Catalan ceramics lacquered in bright white that draws with its mosaics the typical Catalan walls and plays to create spaces with transparencies without creating borders, and we receive the client in a lobby with a yellow and white pavement that with their shapes generate symbolic forms like the sun, umbrellas and the classic beach stripes. The distribution aims to generate different environments and each table feels privileged in each place. A large platform raises in the form of a grandstand a long bench and its multi-purpose tables.

On the first line of the facade several square and round tables are the favorites for the views to the outside and for their comfortable position with respect to the rest of the restaurant.

The protagonist a bar where all the product is displayed and where the guest goes and takes what he wants. A large illuminated cupboard and some ceramic lamps custom designed by an artisan in the Bisbal del Ampurdan indicate the hot spots of the place and the bar.

Hand-woven lamps by Indians Studio with summer colors decorate the grandstand, and combine perfectly with those of fabric suspension.

At the back of the restaurant, a great illustration of a whale by Joana Santamans accompanies a multipurpose space where you can held an event and with its a garland lighting style gives versatility to the multiple distributions.

The corridor on the way to this space is divided by some structures of ropes and iron and a variety of fish made also by Joana Santamans.

The graphic image we wanted to conserve name and logo and that already dragged a good identity and category and we designed some cards with the plot of the tiles of the bar.
