Dear ME Restaurant, located at Cape Town (SouthAfrica) and designed by Francois du Plessis Interiors, has been selected for the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards 2012 shortlist, in the international category “Middle East & Africa”.

The project was a long drawn out affair because of battles with The South African Heritage society, the building is nearly 200 years old and it did not meet the safety requirements for a public space. Structural enhancements were needed to ensure the floors could take the weight of several people.

The interiors were influence by nature in the deli, for instance the honeycomb wine cooler under the stairs, the flower stickers on the walls, the upside down plant pots and the raw wood tables. On the stairway the table mountain stone, which is part of the original structure, is left exposed.

Upstairs the lounge area was supposed to invoke a feeling of “grannies” home and in stark contrast the white room, which is used for functions, is a blank canvas where all the original Victorian Architectural finishes were retained and simply painted white.
