Formaldehyde is a commonly used chemical compound in the particleboard manufacturing process as well as in many production processes in a wide range of industries. It is also naturally present in the environment. According to different studies, it may have adverse effects on certain people and even increase the risk of certain diseases.

According to Soledat Berbegal, Actiu's Consultant and Brand Reputation director manufacturing furniture must be people-friendly and environmentally-friendly. This initiative is part of our philosophy of sustainability throughout every level of the company and in every process we carry out. If companies’ priorities include taking care of the planet, they must also look after society, as people's health will be essential for companies in the short and long term. Investing in health and well-being is of the utmost importance, especially right now”.

Air quality in workspaces

Air quality is one of the ten parameters used by the WELL V2 Certification to ensure health and well-being in the workplace, through a number of strategies, which include reducing formaldehyde to less than 27 ppb.

The indoor air quality inside buildings depends on variables such as compartmentalisation, the design of the ventilation/air conditioning systems, their operating conditions and upkeep, and the presence of sources of pollution. To ensure health and well-being, it is therefore essential to improve filtration and ventilation, as well as monitoring and measuring indoor air.

Certified materials

All Actiu's products made with chipboard and hot-melt laminated surfaces are certified in accordance with the US EPA TSCA Title VI and California Air Resources Board (CARB) Phase 2 emission standards).

The measure meets both the requirements of the CARB certification in the USA and the new E05 standard required in the German market. These 0% formaldehyde certified boards are used across Actiu's entire melamine product range.

Expansion of production capacity

In 2020, Actiu expanded its Actiu 7 manufacturing plant, close to its headquarters in the Actiu Technology Park. It sought to create spaces that, through design, would be efficient, comfortable and functional; both on the inside, through its products, and on the outside, with the architecture of its headquarters in the Actiu Technology Park that fosters sustainable resource management and minimum environmental impact.

In 2011, Actiu became the first European company in the industry to be awarded the LEED Certification and. After several years of hard work and carrying out improvements, it became the fifth company in the world, the second in Europe and the first in Spain to be awarded the WELL Platinum V.2 Certification. Together with receiving an upgrade of the LEED certification in 2017 from Gold to Platinum, this makes Actiu the first company in the world to hold both certifications.

The LEED Certification assesses the exterior architecture of a building and its sustainable management of resources. WELL identifies, measures and monitors the characteristics of buildings that impact the health and well-being of their occupants.

All Actiu products share the same sustainable production philosophy, which includes using environmentally friendly materials and resources as well as energy efficiency in the production thereof.
