“Materials & Nature” piazza at interzum 2013: a sensory trade fair experience

See, smell, hear, feel and taste – visitors to interzum 2013 can expect a real sensory and emotional experience: The “Materials & Nature” piazza in hall 6 brings real wood exhibits and decor together in one space. Visitors can tour the five different areas, each requiring them to apply a different sense, where they can discover future trends in furniture and interior design. interzum 2013 has much to offer – not just at exhibitor stands but also in the wide-ranging special areas: the piazzas. The piazzas are developed by experts in the relevant field and have become a real visitor attraction over the years: “Visitor interest in these ‘exhibitions within exhibitions’ is extremely high in light of the particularly innovative and trendy exhibits,” says Matthias Pollmann, project manager at interzum. “They give rise to new collaborative ideas and often help to establish contact between visitors and exhibitors as the representative companies in the piazzas have their own stands in nearby halls.” The 2013 fair will feature real wood and decorative prints combined in one piazza. “The majority of trade visitors use both real wood and decorative surfaces in their work, which is why we decided to bring the two elements together in one attraction for the first time,” explains Katrin de Louw at neelsen designmanagement, the company behind the “Materials & Nature” piazza design in hall 6. “Real wood suppliers are deemed especially sustainable and decor experts are often incredibly innovative, so they have a lot to offer one another. What’s more, the attractive, centrally-located space gives visitors an immediate overview of all the latest trends and innovations. The piazza can be viewed and accessed from every side and draws on all five senses: sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. Visitors can browse through the different emotionally-charged areas of the piazza as they would in a museum. Regardless of their profession, the piazza has something for everyone – from industry clients and manufacturers to designers and interior designers. Here they can see wood grown into unusual shapes, eye-catching digital prints, trendy wood and colours, new substrates and design ideas. They can touch new structures and surfaces, three-dimensional reliefs, solid wood, brush-finished thick veneer and soft-touch varnishes. They can smell the different wood exhibits, including wenge, rosewood and cedar, as well as the scented surfaces, featuring water-based varnishes, oils, and waxes, that offer up something new to stimulate visitors’ olfactory senses. The sound design zone features linked systems, acoustic panels and laminate flooring. Visitors can also listen to the lecture programme, to which exhibitors and external experts can add their contributions. And after exploring the sensory world of the piazza, visitors can retreat to the catering zone and enjoy something to eat before continuing their tour of the fair. After all, a sensory exhibit wouldn’t be complete without taste! Industry interest is extremely high, in part because of the direct link between exhibits in special areas and participating companies' trade stands.
