Danish design brand Lightyears is presented this year at Euroluce in Milan with interesting novelties adding new expressions to familiar forms, a combination of tradition with innovation. Simple, functional designs and rooted in the Nordic design aesthetic. One of these novelties is the table/wall lamp AQ01.

The new AQ01™ desk light, designed by Anne Qvist from Anne Qvist Design Office, reveals a recognisable design expression while offering an innovative take of refined details and curved lines.

In my opinion, design's first job is to translate complexity into simplicity in both function and expression,” says Anne Qvist. “There is a strong tendency in the way we design to be more emotional and simple. Maybe because technology no longer fascinates us and instead we use technology to our convenience. This is also the main idea behind the AQ01: technology makes it possible to reduce the number of visible components, and what remains visually are two arms, a lamp shade and a rotary joint. A very simple-looking product with a lot of technology built into it.

With its curvy edges and matte finish, the AQ01's shade is designed to attract the human hand and can be switched on and off or dimmed directly on the head. The diffuser is made using a thicker material to prevent glare and give off 100 percent direct downward illumination in a symmetric rotational pattern. The delicate arms connecting the two joints hide the wire within and keep it in place with an internal spring, keeping the lamp's elegant exterior clear of excess visual elements. As a desk light, the AQ01 can be installed as a plug-in or placed in a table base and looks equally alluring with the wall bracket as a reading light in a lounge area or as a bedside light. The AQ01 comes in white, black and blue.

Anne Qvist is an Aarhus-based architect and designer with her own design studio, and the AQ01 is the result of her first collaboration with LIGTHYEARS. Qvist's design expresses a sense of pragmatism combined with respect for both craftsmanship and context. She believes in changeability and diversity, and emphasizes design that is able to enter many different contexts with a high level of usability, functionality and humanity. She categorizes design in a larger context, where it takes on new meaning and has the ability to enact change.
